Wireless tethering has come a long way, but I’m going to be honest — I generally avoid it as a primary workflow.
The bottleneck is straightforward: transferring raw files wirelessly is still too slow. And if you switch to JPEG-only transmission to get the speed up, you lose the flexibility to adjust color on the file, which means you’re working with whatever the camera gave you. For most of my work, that’s not enough control.
That said, wireless tethering absolutely has its place. It’s something every digital tech should know how to set up, and there are situations where it’s the right call.
When Wireless Makes Sense
- Test shots and quick checks. When the photographer is in a tricky position — on a ladder, in a tight space, shooting overhead — and just needs to see if the frame is right before committing. Wireless gets the image to the screen without running a cable through an obstacle course.
- Precarious or mobile setups. Rooftops, moving vehicles, locations where a cable is a safety hazard or physically impossible. In these cases wireless isn’t a convenience, it’s the only option.
- Client review on larger sets. When the art director needs to see images from across the room and running cable isn’t practical.
When Wired Is Still Better
For anything that’s your primary capture workflow — commercial shoots, editorial, e-commerce — wired tethering is still the answer. It’s faster, more reliable, and gives you full-resolution raw files with complete color control at the workstation.
Until we can transfer raw files wirelessly at the same speed as a USB cable, wireless tethering is a backup tool, not a replacement for the cable.
Canon’s WFT-R10A
If you’re in the Canon ecosystem, the WFT-R10A is the most polished wireless option for the EOS R5 and R5C. It supports dual-band WiFi (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), and the smartest feature is selective transmission — you can capture RAW+JPEG and send only the JPEG to Capture One while keeping the full raw on the card. It also doubles as a battery grip, which helps offset the power drain from the wireless radio.
Nikon, Sony, and Third-Party Options
Nikon’s WT transmitters (like the WT-7) work but tend to be bulky. Sony has built-in WiFi that gets the job done for basic transfers. Third-party options like CamRanger and Air Direct offer more flexibility across brands but add another piece of gear to manage and power.
Making Wireless Work When You Use It
- Shoot RAW+JPEG and transmit only JPEGs for speed.
- Use a dedicated router on 5 GHz — don’t rely on the camera’s built-in WiFi hotspot.
- Keep a clear line of sight between the transmitter and receiver.
- Keep firmware current on both the camera and transmitter.
- Always have a wired backup. This is non-negotiable for any shoot that matters.
The Bottom Line
Wireless tethering is a useful tool in specific situations, but it’s not a replacement for a cable. Know how to set it up, know when to use it, and don’t let anyone convince you it’s ready to be your primary workflow — it’s not there yet.
